Blackburn Rovers manager Tony Mowbray has admitted that the team have let themselves down in recent months.
Rovers were just three points outside the Championship play-off places after winning their first four league matches of 2019, before a poor run of nine defeats and just one victory from eleven league matches.
Mowbray’s side recorded back-to-back wins for the first time since that run with victories over Derby County and Nottingham Forest last week.
The Blackburn boss admitted that he team have let themselves down in recent months because of the poor run.
“We feel as though we’ve let ourselves down the last couple of months because we were right on the cusp of the play-offs and getting about one and a half points a game if you balance it all out,” said Mowbray, as quoted by the Lancashire Telegraph.
“Then for two months, we had 11 games and we managed to win one match. Generally, a soft under belly, we let too many soft goals in,” added the Rovers boss.
Blackburn have suffered injuries to key first-team players this season and Mowbray admitted that he needs to strengthen his squad in the summer transfer window if the team are to challenge for promotion next season.
“They’re doing great and yet I feel if we’re going to be right at the top end of the Championship next season then we need to find some players who are competing with this lot to give us more depth for when the injuries do come along.”
Blackburn are currently 15th in the Championship table, but are twelve points outside the play-off places with four matches left to play.
Rovers now face Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road on Friday, before Bolton Wanderers visit Ewood Park on Monday.
Mowbray could be right. After such a brilliant start to 2019, it has been a really disappointing few weeks for Blackburn.
One win from nine league matches is nowhere near good enough and this will frustrate Mowbray given that his side had put themselves in a great position to challenge for the play-offs.
He is right that he should strengthen his squad in the transfer market this summer, to give his side the best possible chance of challenging at the top end of the table next season.
