Tony Mowbray has highlighted one of Leeds United’s qualities, explaining how the Whites pin opposition into their own half, with the Championship manager also piling praise on his counterpart, Marcelo Bielsa.

Leeds suffered just their second defeat of the season against Mowbray’s Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, with the Whites losing 2-1 on their visit to Ewood Park.

However, Mowbray was quick to pile the praise on Leeds despite their defeat in Lancashire, highlighting what they do that makes them so difficult to play against.

Discussing the Whites with Leeds Live, Mowbray said: “If you’re submissive against Leeds they play the whole game in your half.

“I’ve seen them live twice recently and they play 80 minutes of the game in the opposition's half and the opposition were never going to score a goal, they couldn't get over the halfway line, never mind have any shots.

“And that’s telling me he’s a top coach because you don't concede goals when the opposition can't get over the halfway line.

“When you watch the world's best teams, that's how they play.”

Blackburn followed in Birmingham City’s footsteps by defeating Leeds at the weekend, with Mowbray’s side benefitting twice from some sloppy Leeds defending at corners.

Danny Graham benefitted early in the first half to put Blackburn ahead, but Leeds equalised through another Mateusz Klich goal.

However, it was Blackburn who scored the game’s winning goal when Darragh Lenihan found himself unmarked to head Mowbray’s side back ahead.

That victory moved Blackburn further into top-six contention, with Rovers closing the gap on Leeds in the process.

The Whites are looking to bounce back on Wednesday night against Ipswich Town at Elland Road.

The Verdict

Leeds weren’t at their best on Saturday, but still played some good football and caused Blackburn problems.

Mowbray was full of praise for Leeds at full time despite his side’s victory, which is a credit to how the Whites have played this season.

Moving away from Leeds, it was a superb three points for Mowbray’s side, who showed they can compete with the Championship’s best.
