Blackburn Rovers manager Tony Mowbray says he is not concerned by his side's recent poor run of results, because of the quality of the performances they have been putting in during that time.

Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Leeds United means that Blackburn have now won just one of their last eight league games, a run that has left them 18th in the Championship table, ten points adrift of the play-off places and just five clear of the relegation zone.

But despite that, it seems Mowbray s still optimistic that his side can turn their fortunes around sooner rather than later.

When asked if that recent run of results was causing him any concern, the Blackburn boss told the Lancashire Telegraph: “Is it a concern? I judge the team on their performance levels.

“No-one likes losing football matches. If we were getting rolled over easily every game then that would be a concern but I don’t think that’s the case."

Discussing the mindset of his squad following that recent run, Mowbray continued: “I think they still believe, they keep pushing hard. If we can stick three back-to-back wins together we’ll be right back in the mix and I think that’s what we have to keep believing that we’re not far away."

“We need to reverse that and be saying we’ve won six out of eight and then suddenly you’re on the cusp of the play-offs. That’s this league.

“Anyone can beat anyone and we just have to keep going.”

One player Blackburn have been without in recent weeks is defender Darragh Lenihan, who has missed the last five games after suffering a knee injury in the defeat at QPR before the October international break, and Mowbray believes that the defender's impending return will give his side a big lift, as he claimed: “I do know that we had four clean sheets in our first six games, but those players haven’t been there.

“How important is one player missing for six weeks? Pretty important I’d say when he’s your main defender. We’re trying to get by."

After the November international break, Rovers are set for a three-game week, which sees them host Barnsley and Brentford at Ewood Park before travelling to the bet365 Stadium to take on Stoke City.

The Verdict

I'm not sure I entirely agree with Mowbray here.

While the Rovers manager still seems optimistic about his side's performances, Blackburn have been struggling to create many chances on a regular basis this season, which doesn't really feel like the most encouraging thing performance-wise.

Indeed, even if performances were perfect, Rovers do ultimately need results to climb up the table, so you wonder whether Mowbray may be better suited to focusing on that for the time being, in order to quickly alleviate some of the pressure on both his side and himself.

With frustration growing considerably amongst the club's fanbase, it is something you feel he should certainly consider doing.
