Blackburn Rovers manager Tony Mowbray has confirmed the club's interest in Tottenham winger Dilan Markanday, who is in demand this month.

Bournemouth, Nottingham Forest, Stoke City, Celtic, Rangers, QPR, and West Bromwich Albion have all been linked with the 20-year-old after his stunning form for Spurs U23s this term.

Markanday has scored 12 times and provided five assists in 14 Premier League 2 games this term but with his contract set to expire in the summer, Rovers are said to be closing in on a deal (Sky Sports transfer centre (14/01, 09:38).

Speaking to the Lancashire Telegraph yesterday, Mowbray confirmed the Ewood Park outfit's interest in the Spurs academy product.

He said: "I don’t know how close any deals are.

“Dilan Markanday has won a couple of player of the month awards in the Under-23s league.

“He’s a young boy, we’re aware of him, I’m not sure how close anything is.

“He fits the profile of the type of footballer we might want to sign somewhere down the line as a lot of clubs in this league would.

“Young players that you polish up and in a year or so they think ‘wow, where’s he come from?’

“You have to see the raw talent with these players and there are a few young players on our radar and I think it’s best until something materialises that we don’t talk too much about players from other football clubs."

Blackburn has been a fantastic proving ground for young attackers in recent years, with Adam Armstrong, Ben Brereton Diaz, and Harvey Elliott all turning heads with their exploits for the North West club.

It is understood that Markanday has been offered a new contract by Tottenham but is keen to play regular first-team football, something that Mowbray can offer him at Rovers.

The Verdict

With Mowbray confirming the club's interest in Markanday yesterday and reports this morning indicating that a deal may be close, Blackburn could be set to get their hands on another promising attacking talent.

The amount of interest in the 20-year-old and the form he's shown for the U23s this term is proof of just what an exciting signing this would be for Rovers.

Whether he would be ready to play a significant role in Blackburn's promotion push this term remains to be seen but this still looks a fantastic bit of business.

Supporters will hope that this can be wrapped up soon because things can change quickly in the January window and delays may allow another side to hijack the move.
