Tony Mowbray has issued an update on 22-year-old Harry Chapman as the winger continues to impress for Rovers' development squad.

Chapman has featured five times for the development side this season, scoring three goals and managing two assists, whilst also featuring for 30 minutes for the senior side against Oldham Athletic in the EFL Cup in August.

The 22-year-old made 12 appearances for Rovers during their League One campaign in 2017-2018 on loan from Middlesbrough and made the permanent switch to Ewood Park in January 2019.

Manager Tony Mowbray has been impressed with the rate Chapman has matured and said on Tuesday: "He’s maturing as a lad I feel, who understands how important football is rather than thinking turning up and doing a few dribbles is enough."

Mowbray also told the club's official media channels that he is facing a "dilemma" in regards to Chapman's future, not knowing whether to send the winger out on loan despite him being close to first team action.

"I really like Harry Chapman, that’s the reason he’s here. The seriousness of football is something that he has to know, he has to do what he’s good at, work hard, and if he does that then he won’t be far away from getting himself back in first team contention," Mowbray continued.

It all seems to depend on how Chapman gets on for the first team in the coming weeks and Mowbray said: "We’ll see how he impacts the team in the next few weeks and decide what’s best for him in January. Hopefully he will help the team off the bench, if he does that consistently then he’ll get starts as well."

The Verdict

Chapman is clearly impressing Mowbray and should this continue the Blackburn boss can see no reason why he shouldn't be involved in the first team.

If he fails to make an impact on the side straight away however, a loan move in January could work well for his short-term development.

20-year-old John Buckley has already made eight league appearances for Rovers so far this season, showing Mowbray can place his faith in the younger players at the club.

Should Chapman impress for the first team he could turn out to be a revelation for the side going into the new year.
