Rowe is available on a free transfer this summer as the Posh decided not to offer the winger a new deal after he expressed a desire to move back to his native Lancashire.

But that will not put off the Robins boss as he looks to bolter his midfield options as Stephen Pearson and Marvin Elliott have been released whilst Wade Elliott and Simon Gillett returned to Birmingham City and Nottingham Forest respectively.

The Bristol Post understands there has been contact between Bristol City and the player's agent, and Cotterill is hoping to persuade the former Manchester United trainee to move to Ashton Gate.

Rowe, who can also play at left-back, had a reputation for finding the net for Stockport and Peterborough, scoring 34 times in 247 appearances for the two clubs.

Cotterill is looking for players who can contribute goals from all over the pitch to ease the pressure on strikers Sam Baldock and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas.

The 25-year-old Rowe scored nine times in 43 appearances as the Posh reached the League One play-offs.

City stepped up their interest in Rowe when it became apparent Matt Grimes was out of their reach.

The club had kept tabs on the Exeter City teenager for a while and scouts from the club has been to watch the youngster on a number of occasions.

It seems now he was move to a big club with reportedly Premier League clubs Liverpool and recently relegated Norwich City are said to be interested.
