Sheffield Wednesday captain Tom Lees has admitted that he wants the club to tie goalkeeper Keiren Westwood down to a new contract in the summer.

The 34-year-old has had a brilliant season for the Owls, keeping eleven clean sheets in 19 appearances in the Championship, but is due to become a free agent in the summer.

Westwood is one of several first-team players who will be out of contract at the end of the season and the goalkeeper has been linked with a move to Huddersfield Town.

Lees has heaped praise on the goalkeeper for the way he has performed this season and admitted that he would like to see him extend his stay at Hillsborough.

“I would love to see him stay, of course. His performances speak for themselves. There will be a lot of decisions made this summer but, if you look at this one, it is one that looks straightforward," said Lees, as quoted by The Yorkshire Post.

“But, it is not down to me. It is down to other people. Hopefully, it can get sorted. But there are a few decisions to be made this summer. That is a big one."

Westwood was the Owls' man of the match against Leeds United at Elland Road on Saturday, where he produced a number of outstanding saves to deny the hosts more goals.

After the 1-0 defeat, Sheffield Wednesday are currently tenth in the Championship table, six points outside the play-offs and still have an outside chance of making the top six.

The Owls travel to league leaders Norwich City on Friday night and need a win to keep their fading hopes of a top-six finish alive.

The Verdict

Westwood has had an outstanding season for Sheffield Wednesday since being restored to the side following Jos Luhukay’s departure from the club.

Of all the first-team players who are out of contract in the summer, perhaps Westwood is the most important.

He has proved that he is still one of the best goalkeepers in the Championship and perhaps Lees is right, Wednesday should try to tie him down to a new deal.
