There were many surprise results in the League Cup this week, with Sunderland's impressive comeback 3-1 win at Premier League Burnley one of the standout victories.

Like counterpart Sean Dyche, Black Cats boss Jack Ross made changes for the tie but it paid off, with goals from Will Grigg, Tom Flanagan and George Dobson ensuring the north-east side progressed.

It was a rare goal for defender Flanagan, and he took to Instagram today to share his thoughts on what was a memorable night, although he kept it short and sweet, stating the win at Turf Moor was 'an enjoyable evening'.

The victory has set up another tie against a Premier League side for Ross' men, with a trip to Sheffield United next up in the cup.

Whether Flanagan's display will be enough for the 27-year-old to keep his place in the XI against Peterborough this weekend remains to be seen, because he has had to settle for a place on the bench for the last three league games - which Sunderland have won.

The Verdict

What a great win that was for Sunderland last night, it was a real statement from those on the fringes that they deserve a chance in the league and that they have a part to play moving forward.

Flanagan was one of those and he should be delighted with his individual contribution against what was a strong Burnley side despite the changes.

It seems unlikely he will get a start against the Posh given the club's recent form but the defender will be pushing for a recall if anyone's form dips.
