Watford picked up a crucial three points in the race for promotion, as they ran out 3-1 winners over Blackburn Rovers at Vicarage Road on Wednesday evening.

The Hornets took the lead after 13 minutes, when Joao Pedro opened the scoring, before Tom Cleverley doubled the lead shortly after.

Rovers pulled a goal back in the first-half though, when Ben Brereton's strike from distance found the back of Ben Foster's net to see Tony Mowbray's side have some hope in getting something from the game.

But hope of finding an equaliser was quickly dashed, as Darragh Lenihan turned the ball into his own net just four minutes into the second-half, as Watford went on to pick up the three points to move ahead of Bournemouth in the second-tier standings.

The midfielder has made six appearances in all competitions this term for Watford, and will be hoping he can build on these strong performances as the season progresses.

Cleverley and his Watford team-mates are set to return to action this weekend, when they take on promotion rivals AFC Bournemouth, in what is certain to be a tricky test for Vladimir Ivić's side.

The Verdict:

They rode their luck at times, but will be pleased to pick up the win.

Watford did most of the hard work in this one early on, and they could allow Blackburn to put pressure on them later into the game, when the points were all but sealed.

Cleverley's experience will be relied on this season with a relatively young Watford team, as they look to make a swift return to the Premier League this term.

If he can build on these recent impressive showings, then Watford will almost certainly be in contention to return to the top-flight at the first time of asking.
