Newcastle United came back after a disappointing draw to Queens Park Rangers in midweek as they overcame play-off hopefuls Derby County at St James Park on Saturday.

The Magpies winger Matt Ritchie got his goal tally for the season up to 12 after a first-half strike was enough to claim all three points over former manager Steve McClaren's Rams.

With chances from Aleksander Mitrovic and Mohamed Diame to extend Newcastle's lead, but unable to, the visitors should have netted an equaliser just after the interval when Tom Ince had an open goal, but couldn't get the ball in the back of the net.

A number of the home supporters will be delighted that their promotion rivals Brighton & Hove Albion fell to defeat on Thursday and the Tyneside club took full advantage to re-gain top spot.

The Seagulls play on Sunday but as it stands Newcastle United lead the Sky Bet Championship by two points.

Fans will be happy their side fought well to earn the victory to boost their hopes of an instant return to the top-flight, as shown from reactions on Twitter.....

Newcastle United supporters, what did you make of that performance? Who was your man of the match? Do you think Rafa Benitez's team can finish above Brighton?
