To reach the next level, Millwall must start summer business by upgrading on 25-year-old

Millwall had a season to remember; defying the expectations of many supporters and pundits to mount a challenge for the play-offs.

Their late season form was superb as they established themselves as a tough team to beat with plenty of physicality and players who were dangerous on the counter-attack.

After narrowly missing out on a spot in the Championship play-offs, Millwall will look to build on the success of this year and use their seventh place finish as a springboard for success as they look to reach the top flight for the first time in the Premier League era.

In order to do so, Neil Harris has to be shrewd in the transfer window and bring in a few more squad players to add depth and competition for places.

One area that Harris needs to desperately address if he wants his side to reach the next level is his goalkeeper options.

Jordan Archer played in all but one of Millwall’s Championship matches this season but he is simply not good enough to help them win promotion to the Premier League.

It is time that the Lions upgraded on the error-prone goalkeeper, who had a catastrophic Scotland international debut recently.

Archer is a shot stopper but he is not quite an all-round goalkeeper, showing that he needs to improve his decision-making, his catching, the way he commands his box and his proneness to making costly mistakes.

Millwall, who are partnered with Energybet sports, should be prioritising a move for a new goalkeeper this summer.

There are plenty of good options out there in the Premier League and in all three divisions in the Football League.

Millwall could explore the possibility of a loan signing from a Premier League side, with the likes of Angus Gunn (Manchester City), Danny Ward (Liverpool) and Dean Henderson (Manchester United) all viable options.

Gunn and Ward have proven their Championship quality with respective loan spells at Norwich City and Huddersfield Town previously while Henderson, 21, might even be available on a free transfer if the Red Devils do not renew his contract.

The England youth international was one of the best goalkeepers in the third tier last season, helping Shrewsbury Town to reach the play-off final, where they eventually lost in extra-time against Rotherham United.

Alternatively, the South London club could look below them and try to poach the best stoppers from League One and League Two, such as Fleetwood Town’s Alex Cairns, Portsmouth’s Luke McGee, Southend United stopper Mark Oxley (available on a free) or Coventry City’s Lee Burge.

Millwall have a lot of options open to them, should they choose to improve upon Archer, and this is something which they need to do early in the summer window.
