As Sheffield United sit at the top of League One, Chris Wilder may have already begun making preparations for next season, assessing which players can make the cut at Championship level.

Chris Wilder has done excellently to compile a squad that is capable of at the very top of League One, the consistency of performances and results has seen Wilder's side open an eight-point gap on Fleetwood Town in second place.

One of the key reason for Sheffield United's success has been the quality of recruitment, however, the improvement in quality has seen some players who may have felt that they would have a bigger role to play drift to the peripheries of the squad.

As preparation begins for life in the Championship, the summer transfer window could prove vital for Chris Wilder and Sheffield United.

There is already an expected high turnover of players both incoming and outgoing which could see some Sheffield United squad players assessing their future at the South Yorkshire club.

FLW writer Elliott Wheat-Bowen looks at TWO Sheffield United players who may feel that it is time to leave as their careers are at a real crossroads.

Marc McNulty

After joining from Portsmouth, Scottish striker Marc McNulty has been a loyal servant of Sheffield United as he has made over 50 appearances for the South Yorkshire club.

However, this season, McNulty has fallen down the pecking order behind Billy Sharp, Caolan Lavery and January arrival James Hanson.

In search of regular first team football, the 24-year-old striker joined League 1 rivals Bradford City on a season-long loan.

Chris Wilder's willingness to allow McNulty to join a League One rival on loan may suggest that the 24-year-old striker is running on borrowed time at Sheffield United.

The Scottish striker's career is at a real crossroads.

Chris Hussey

Ever since Chris Wilder's tactical decision to switch from a 4-4-2 to a 3-5-2, Sheffield United's performances and results have drastically improved.

However, the tactical masterstroke by Wilder did mean that some personnel including summer arrival Chris Hussey have had to be sacrificed for the sake of the formation change.

Chris Hussey, an orthodox full-back, joined Sheffield United from Bury in the summer. However, after starting in Sheffield United's first five games, since then, Hussey has been used sparingly due to the excellent performances of Danny Lafferty in the left wing-back role.

Having not even featured in fourteen of Sheffield United's last fifteen matchday squads, Chris Hussey has drifted to the very periphery of the squad.

At the age of 28, the vastly experienced League 1 defender may feel that his career is at a real crossroad at Sheffield United and for the sake of his career, he has to leave the South Yorkshire club in search of regular first team football.
