Millwall exceeded all expectations last season, but that has made next season a lot harder.

The Lions finished in eighth place last season, and even looked at one stage that they would finish in the play-offs.

Neil Harris altered little because he kept the style direct with defensive organisation and solidity being key foundations in the 4-4-2 system he utilised.

His transfer business was also limited as he added a few players to the core of the squad, which was largely successful, with George Saville being a standout performer.

Harris will need to keep adding to the team if they want this success to be sustainable, though. They punched above their weight, and teams will have started to work them out, so changes are needed especially personnel as well as potentially a few tactical tweaks.

Here are deals that need to happen this summer...

Marshall is their main summer target because he impressed on loan last season as the main option for the left-wing spot. He has the attributes for a traditional winger such as crossing and an ability to beat a defender in 1v1s. Therefore, he suits Millwall's aerial play which is their chief attacking outlet whether that be from crossing or set pieces.

Having skilled dribblers on either wing means they don't have to be possession based because they can spread the play out wide and let the wingers create an opening or full-backs depending on if they overlap. It's a simplistic style, but it brought results last season which makes Marshall an important signing.

Aiden O'Brien was a back-up striker for the Lions last season behind Steve Morison and Lee Gregory as well an option for the left-wing role. However, he struggled to make a mark in his opportunities because he scored four goals and assisted one in 1797 minutes. In contrast, Tom Elliott scored four in 855 minutes.

Marshall can be the main option for the left-wing role with Fred Onyedinma being a back-up while Elliott should be the third striker option. Therefore, there is little need for O'Brien, so they should sell him and bring in someone else better suited to this division.
