The Trotters narrowly avoided relegation last season, so they need to invest wisely this summer.

Phil Parkinson did well to even keep Bolton in the division considering the tiny budget that he had to work with. This isn't likely to have changed much over the space of a year, so free agents are loanees are likely to be the main incomings.

Erhun Oztumer has already been signed, which is a great move because he was one of the top players in League One last season and they got him on a free.

This is the kind of business that Bolton need to be doing for the rest of the summer if they want to avoid being in another relegation dogfight.

Here are some deals which would help them significantly...

Ireland is available due to being released by Stoke City after they were relegated down to the Championship. He has rarely played in recent seasons, but he is a talented midfielder and would certainly improve this Bolton team.

His issue is likely to be consistency over an entire season because of the limited playing time which means he probably isn't physically prepared for the demands of a Championship season. However, his availability as a free agent makes him a worthwhile acquisition because he could certainly have an impact for parts of the season in central areas with his ball-winning ability and incisive passing from deep.

Cotterill had a forgetful season as he was released by Birmingham in December by mutual consent before joining Indian side ATK who didn't opt to retain him. However, Bolton could offer him a route back into the Championship, which is a division he is accustomed to.

He is similar to Ireland in that he isn't an ideal signing, but his availability as a free agent and the fact that he could fill a role in the team means he would be a useful signing. Bolton can't afford to be too picky with who they bring in, so they will have to look past his form last season. Cotterill would be a good addition to the wide options at Parkinson's disposal and he should be able to fit into their style.
