Even if it means taking a hefty loss, Aston Villa should get rid of Ross McCormack as soon as possible.

The Scottish striker cost £12 million from Fulham in 2016, yet has only scored for Villa three times since.

McCormack was one of the Championship’s top strikers.

His tally of 66 goals in the three seasons preceding his move to Villa Park remains impressive. Since joining, he has struggled for form. His loan at Nottingham Forest produced a solitary goal in seven appearances. A midseason loan to Melbourne City provided him with confidence, scoring 14 times in 17 appearances, but not a challenge.

His problem is as much to do with his approach as it is his form.

He has run afoul of managers from each of his last four clubs. This has come about from failing to be fit enough for games to repeatedly missing training.

Steve Bruce needs a reliable striker.

Most of the goals from last season came from midfield. Assuming much of the current talent stays, a quality striker could push Aston Villa up into contention for automatic promotion.

On paper, McCormack could be that player.

He has the goal-scoring record. In reality, it is clear that he has lost the mental strength and drive to be at the heart of a promotion chase.

Bruce has had two years to inspire a change in attitude and appears to have given up hope. Consequently, Villa should cut their losses and sell him to the first bidder.
