Barnsley are amongst the Championship clubs interested in signing Jacob Bedeau from Scunthorpe United this January, according to The Athletic.

The 20-year-old defender is entering the final months of his deal with the League Two side.

The former Aston Villa youth captain is also attracting the interest of Huddersfield, Rotherham and Luton at this stage.

Here, our writers discuss the Barnsley link…

There's a good chance he'd be a decent signing.

Barnsley are one of those sides that rely on youth to really help them along and they have notched some good results of late in the Championship.

They can't outspend many of those around them in the league and so they have to box clever, trying to find gems lower down the leagues.

Bedeau certainly looks a player capable of doing well higher than League Two level and I think Barnsley would benefit from bringing him in and trying to help develop him further.

Chris Thorpe

This is a signing that would really follow the trend that Barnsley have adopted in recent times, with the Tykes having made a series of young additions in recent seasons at Oakwell.

Bedeau has taken the step of leaving Aston Villa for regular football in the EFL and as a result is thriving under guidance of Neil Cox at Scunthorpe so far.

Given the current financial state of clubs at League Two level, it would not be at all surprising to see the young defender pluck for a move to the Championship, as it should in theory offer him a more stable career path than staying at Glanford Park.

Whether he is needed is another matter, as he could well find game-time hard to come by if he makes the step up to the second division, perhaps suggesting that he could be loaned straight back to Scunthorpe if a deal does indeed come to fruition.

Barnsley quiz: Are these 12 facts about the Tykes’ history genuine or not?

Jacob Potter

I really like the sound of this deal for Barnsley.

Bedeau has previously been on the books with Aston Villa, and caught the eye with a number of strong performances for the club's Under-23s side as they won the Premier League Cup and finished runners-up in their league campaign.

He made the bold call in moving to Scunthorpe United so early into his career, but it's clearly paid off as he's being linked with a move to the Championship with both Barnsley and Huddersfield Town.

He's a player with a point to prove, and I think he could be an excellent addition to the Tykes' defence this term.

Added depth to their team is never a bad thing, and I think he'd be a player that could go on and play at a higher level if the early stages of his professional career are anything to go by.

He ticks all the boxes for me.
