It is set to be a very tough season back in the Championship for Newcastled United but by keeping hold of manager Rafa Benitez they have set the foundations in place for a bounce straight back into the Premier League.

Benitez has moved quickly to add strength to his squad with goalkeeper Matz Sels joining Gent, striker Dwight Gayle signing from Crystal Palace, and attacking midfielder Matt Ritchie being acquired from Bournemouth for a total of £27 million.

The Toon Army have also seen veteran centre back Steven Taylor and January signing Andros Townsend depart the club on a free transfer and to Crystal Palace respectively, with the club taking £13 million for the sale of Townsend.

Wingers have become a priority for Benitez as the club looks to adopt a wide passing game this season. Football League World writer Steve Day has a look at which three players in that position should be brought to Newcastle by Benitez.

Modou Barrow

Barrow

The first winger on this list is a raw talent in the form of Swansea City's Barrow. The 23- year old was born in Gambia but has enjoyed a varied football education, having spent time at a number of clubs including IFK Norrkoping, Varbergs BoIS, and Ostersunds FK before joining the Swans.

He has not featured regularly for Francesco Guidolin's team, making only 18 first team league appearances last season. He impressed during loan spells with Nottingham Forest and Blackburn Rovers in the Championship back in 2015 so he has experienced of playing in the second tier.

One of the defining attributes of Barrow is his pace. If Newcastle want a player to get to that by-line and whip crosses in then he would be a brilliant option for that.

He has not really flourished by being denied regular first team action and a run of games could be what is needed to see him fulfil his potential.

Lee Chung-Yong

Lee

If the Magpies want a winger that has vast experience of playing at Championship level and can not only deliver the assists but goals at that level then they need to look no further than the South Korean international plying his trade with Crystal Palace.

Lee first came to English football after being signed by League One side Bolton back in 2009 for £2.2 million from his former club FC Seoul. The Trotters were playing in the Premier League at the time and Lee was a competent performer for them at that level.

The 28-year old would offer experience and even though he has not seen his career thrive under Alan Pardew at Selhurst Park he is a player who could still certainly do a fantastic job if he dropped down into the Championship.

His contract runs until 2018 so either Newcastle will need to fork out a few million for his signature or secure his services on loan.

Demarai Gray

Gray

As one of the most exciting English talents playing in the Premier League right now, Gray is a player who is craving first team football this coming season.

He had a few cameo roles in the Premier League title-winning Leicester team but with the likes of Riyad Mahrez and Mark Albrighton performing so well he found his first team opportunities limited.

The England under-21 international only made 12 appearances for the Foxes last season and a step down to the Championship to play every week could be exactly what Gray needs.

At 20-years of age he wants as much action as possible to improve as a player.

If Benitez can persuade Claudio Ranieri to release Gray on loan then it would not only make him a more valuable player for Leicester next season but a manager such as Benitez could really develop Gray effectively and bring the best out of him this coming season.
