Huddersfield Town are interested in signing winger Jonny Hayes from Celtic, a report from TeamTalk has claimed.

The Terriers are apparently one of four English sides interested in a move for the 32-year-old, along with Championship rivals Stoke and Cardiff, as well as Premier League outfit Burnley.

Hayes is currently entering the final year of his contract with Celtic, although the Scottish giants are said to be keen to secure a new deal for the winger, in order to ward off any interest.

So could Hayes prove to be a good signing for Huddersfield if they make a move for him?

Here, we take a look at three reasons why this is a transfer that the Yorkshire club should consider.

He can add quality to their side

Following a dismal start to the season that saw Huddersfield pick up just one point from their opening nine league games, a run of seven games unbeaten under new manager Danny Cowley had seen the Terriers start to pull away from the relegation zone.

That resurgence was however brought to an end somewhat by a 3-1 defeat to early-season promotion contenders Preston North End in the final game before the November international break, which showed that they are still some way off competing with the best in this division at the minute.

Bringing in Hayes, who has played a part in domestic trebles in both seasons since he joined Celtic in 2017, while also competing at Champions League and Europa League level, could therefore add an extra bit of ability they need to take steps towards upping their competitiveness in this division.

It would be a statement of intent

Despite that impressive recent run, it does still feel as though the spectre of that catastrophic relegation from the Premier League last season lingers over the club, not least because of their slow start to the current campaign.

It seems therefore as though the club could do with something significant in order to get that monkey off their back, although that poor run at the start of the season means it could be difficult to do that this year.

Beating off a number of other clubs - including a Premier League side in Burnley - to secure Hayes' services, would therefore demonstrate that the Terriers are still capable of competing on a number of fronts going forward, helping to further lift the mood around the John Smith's Stadium.

It could be cheap

It also seems as though Hayes' current contract situation at Celtic could work in Huddersfield's favour here as well.

With his current deal up in the summer, it means that the winger could walk away from the Scottish giants for nothing at the end of this season, and if he is tempted to move south of the border for the first time in his career, then he may elect not to agree to the new deal Celtic are apparently keen for him to sign.

If that happens, then Celtic may be tempted to allow him to leave for a reduced fee in January, in order to ensure they at least receive something for Hayes rather than nothing, which may make this deal all the more affordable for Huddersfield.
