Millwall came within touching distance of bouncing back to the second tier of English football last year, but suffered a heartbreaking 3-1 defeat at the hands of Barnsley in the play-off final.

The Lions have had a steady, but by no means particularly impressive, start to this season and currently find themselves sitting firmly in mid-table after picking up 6 wins from the opening 15 league games.

The Londoners have a very talented squad for League One level but some may have their sights set on playing at a higher level and after coming so close last season to promotion.

Some of the players may be desperate to fast track their way to the Championship and seek a move away from the club, with the January transfer window just around the corner.

This article is going to take a look at THREE players who should be playing their football in England's 2nd tier...

Lee Gregory

Lee Gregory was subject to intense transfer speculation over the summer from a number of different Championship clubs, most notably Rotherham United who had a number of bids rejected for the Millwall man.

A move never materialised but, interest is likely to re-emerge in January and despite recently signing a new deal with the club, he could be tempted to make a move back to the Championship.

He had a terrific campaign last year as he ended the joint 5th top scorer in League one with a tally of 20 goals, he is a big strong athletic forward with a keen eye for goal and has become a big fans' favourite down at The Den.

Millwall fans are desperate for the club to keep hold of their star striker and would be saddened to see him leave.

Shane Ferguson

Versatile Shane Ferguson is no stranger to the Championship, having made almost 30 appearances for Birmingham City during two separate loan spells.

Ferguson also has over 20 Premier League appearances to his name from his time with Newcastle United and is clearly someone who has the quality to play at Championship level.

The Northern Irishman is a very useful squad member as he is comfortable in a variety of positions, be it either flank or even as a left sided full back. He is excellent with the ball at his feet, is very quick and direct and can be a constant thorn in any oppositions side.

Jordan Archer

Millwall shot-stopper Jordan Archer is someone who has been excelling at League One level and looks to have the potential to make the step up to the Championship.

Archer signed for Millwall in the summer of 2015 on a two-year deal following his release from Tottenham Hotspur.

Last season, he produced many top class goalkeeping displays to help Millwall to the play-off final and was awarded the clubs player of the year award for the season.

He has been capped by the Scottish national team at under 19, 20 and 21 levels and will be harbouring hopes of a call-up to the senior team.
