Derby County

Three in, three out at Derby County this summer

Derby County are enduring another season in the Championship after a series of near misses from promotion to the Premier League.

Under Steve McClaren they reached the Championship play-off final a couple of seasons ago, playing a nice blend of attacking football but were cruelly beaten 1-0 by QPR in the play-off final, despite dominating proceedings.

On the back of this they were strong favourites to go up the following season but were undone by inconsistency and injuries, and despite being in the mix at the end, a final day defeat to Reading saw them miss out on the play-offs.

This caused a meltdown by the fans who were growing frustrated that the team couldn’t hold on to a good league position, and chairman Mel Morris has really gone for it this season.

After McClaren left for Newcastle he was replaced by former Real Madrid assistant Paul Clement but the team struggled to find form with the sides new signings proving flops.

Morris gave Clement a large transfer market warchest and he signed Tom Ince, Bradley Johnson, Jason Shackell and Nick Blackman, but all of these except Shackell and Butterfield have proved disappointing.

The team’s form in the New Year was starting to dwindle and Clement got the dreaded sack and was replaced by academy manager Darren Wassall.

His performance as manager hasn’t been much more impressive with his tactical ineptness proving clear, like when they let a 3-0 lead slip at Rotherham.

But they are still clinging on to a play-off place and are still in range of the top two and with Harry Redknapp brought in to advise Wassall, and a good 1-0 over rivals Nottingham Forest recently, they may have the suitable mentality to go on a good run during the run in.

Here are THREE players Derby should get rid of in the next transfer window, and THREE players they should sign…..
