Blackburn Rovers have taken goalkeeper Ben Garratt on the trial ahead of a potential move to Ewood Park, the Lancashire Telegraph have reported.

The 25-year-old is a free agent following his release from League Two side Crewe Alexandra at the end of last season, having spent his entire career to date with the Railwaymen.

There has already been plenty of change to Rovers' goalkeeping ranks this summer. Last season's number one David Raya has left to join Brentford, with Brighton's Christian Walton joining on a season-long loan in his place, while 21-year-old Andy Fisher has moved to Northampton Town on loan until January.

Earlier in the summer, it had been suggested that Blackburn could look for a more experienced and established 'keeper to provide support for Walton this season, and with Garratt perhaps not entirely fitting that bill, we've taken a look at three other free-agent goalkeepers Blackburn may be better off considering than the former Crewe stopper.

Julian Speroni

At 40-years-old, Speroni may be approaching the end of his career, but he could still offer a useful option for Blackburn.

Following his release after 15 years at Crystal Palace at the end of last season, the Argentine revealed that he has no plans to retire just yet, and he could be open to stepping down to the Championship in order to continue his career.

Not only would his top-flight experience make him a reliable choice for Rovers should he be called upon this season, but he could also provide some much welcome insight into playing in the Premier League for Walton ahead of his return to top-tier Brighton next summer.

Boaz Myhill

Another goalkeeper with plenty of experience in the top two tiers of English football, Myhill is another viable option for Blackburn to consider.

Having left West Brom at the end of last season, the former Wales international could be open to a move to Ewood Park in order to continue his Championship career.

With all three of his appearances last season coming in the League Cup, it also seems as though Myhill could be comfortable with playing second fiddle to Walton at times during the current campaign, which may help Rovers' chances should they look to sign the 36-year-old.

Jordan Archer

Having left Millwall at the end of last season, it was recently reported that Archer is now training with League One side Southend United in order to maintain his fitness.

Having just dropped out of the Championship following his departure from The Den however, you do feel that Archer could be open to a move to Blackburn so as to secure a swift return to the second tier, after spending the past two seasons at that level.

It is also worth noting that, at just 26-years-old, Archer still has plenty of time remaining in his career, so completing a deal for him now could go some way to helping Rovers fill the gap that Walton will leave between the posts when he returns to Brighton at the end of the season.
