Three EFL clubs that could benefit from Nottingham Forest loan deal

Nottingham Forest youngster Ryan Yates has been linked with a loan move to Scunthorpe United this morning, as reported by Scunthorpe Live via the Grimsby Telegraph.

The 21-year-old made the bench this weekend as Forest went down 1-0 against Bristol City, but his chances at the City Ground have been limited.

He’s made one Championship appearance as a late sub in the 2-0 defeat at Reading, as well as starting the EFL Cup game against Bury.

Last season the academy product spent time on loan at Notts County and Scunthorpe. He helped fire the former to the top of League Two, but they fell away after his recall. He also helped Scunthorpe to the play-off semi-final, where they lost to Rotherham United.

Whilst the Iron are interested in his signature, there are plenty of other clubs who could benefit from his services right now. Scunthorpe are 16th in League One and unlikely to break into the promotion frame, but Yates could have a big part to play for clubs at the top end of the table or maybe even in the Championship.

Here’s three other sides we think would benefit from making a move for the midfielder.

Rotherham United

It was the Millers who ended Yates’ last spell at Scunthorpe with the two-legged play-off win, and it should be the Millers who snatch him this time around.

They’ve recently seen Ryan Manning return to QPR and had earmarked Yates as a possible recruit in the summer.

They’d do well to grab him on loan now, his steel and resolve in the middle of the park would be hugely important for them as they bid to avoid relegation.

Barnsley

The Tykes have lost ground in the hunt for an automatic promotion spot this season, but are still firmly in place for a play-off place. They’re hunting a Championship return and Yates would be perfect for them.

He’s been involved in a top six hunt before and understands exactly what is required. His success on two fronts last season is proof enough he could add a certain knowledge to Daniel Stendel’s side.

Doncaster

Grant McCann’s side have been one of the surprise packages this season in League One and they’re just on the edge of the play-off race.

They need some resolve to ensure they remain there, which Yates could bring.

That understanding of the promotion race from last season would be important, but also his energy and endeavour would help out the stretched squad in the coming weeks.
