Alex Neil's Norwich City side suffered an immediate return to the Championship after finishing 19th in the Premier League this season, just 12 months after the elation they experienced at Wembley in the play-off final.

One of the main criticisms of the Canaries last year has been their recruitment and their inability to construct a side that was capable of staying clear of the relegation zone in the top flight.

The proverbial yo-yo.

Another issue that blighted their campaign were defensive frailties and individual mistakes that costs them points at crucial parts of the season.

There did not seem to be a back four capable of keeping regular clean sheets, and there was no consistent partner for the very impressive January acquisition Timm Klose.

Neil may choose to find an alternative to Sebastian Bassong and Russell Martin at centre-back, as well as gearing up for the possibility that there may be a great deal of interest in Klose from elsewhere should he have an impressive Euro 2016 with Austria.

With this in mind, FLW's Tom Percival looks at three defensive rocks Norwich City should sign as they seek to get out of the Championship at the first time of asking once more.

Connor Goldson

The 23-year-old has had a real breakout season at the heart of the Brighton defence this campaign, as the Seagulls came within a whisker of their first ever Premier League season.

12 months ago, Goldson looked far from the first-team picture but now looks like the real deal in the Championship and has the capability to play at the next level.

He would be a good long-term option for Neil to look at, allowing him to grow with the club as well as having an immediate impact on the first-team.

He has proven over the past few months his capabilities within a side competing at the top end of the league, and with age on his side, Goldson can only get better.

James Tarkowski

6 months ago, Tarkowski was one of the hottest prospects outside of the Premier League, and was eventually prised away from Brentford by Burnley for an undisclosed fee.

Since then however, things haven't really worked out at the Clarets, with Tarkowski unable to dislodge the settled centre-half pairing of Ben Mee and Michael Keane.

However, there surely can be no disputing the former Oldham man's quality at this level, and if chances continue to be limited at Turf Moor, it could represent the ideal time to land him.

Neil should consider swooping in. Similarly to Goldson, Tarkowski is only 23, and could have a long-term role to play in East Anglia.

Danny Batth

If the Canaries were to bring in Wolves captain Danny Batth, they would be acquiring a player with vast experience of Championship football as well as the potential to grow with the club to the Premier League.

Batth has been admired by a number of clubs for a while now higher up the football pyramid, and may be a player Neil considers bringing in for his side's promotion push next campaign.

The 25-year old would also bring with him real leadership skills, which could come in very useful for the Norwich side were he to play alongside Russell Martin.

The Canaries chief may need to bring in a number of defenders over the summer to strengthen his squad, and because of the attributes the former Colchester man possesses, he should be under serious consideration.
