Charlton Athletic owner Thomas Sandgaard has suggested that the positivity of the fans helped facilitate his takeover of the club.

It has been a very difficult year for the Addicks, who have had to deal with a string of off the field issues – including an ugly boardroom dispute, an EFL investigation, failed takeovers, and a transfer embargo – and were relegated from the Championship.

After months of uncertainty, the Danish businessman completed his takeover of the south London club in September.

Speaking to journalist Justin Allen, Sandgaard revealed the impact of the positive response he had received from the Valley faithful and suggested that it even helped facilitate the takeover itself.

He said: "The tremendous support was really on the back of several years of not being pleased with the ownership. What looks like a different type of ownership was obviously incredibly positive for the fans.

"I am so appreciative and I don't think the fans will know how much that support actually helped facilitate the process."

With the transfer embargo lifted, Lee Bowyer has been able to add players to his squad but their start to the season has been underwhelming so far.

Charlton are 18th in League One after taking four points from their first four league games of the season.

The Verdict

Charlton fans will love to hear this from Sandgaard.

Not only is he showing how much their support means to him but he's also suggesting that the Valley faithful played a part in the takeover, which will without a doubt go wonderfully.

That said, it's early days yet. The owner has talked the talk but fans will want to see him walk the walk and be consistent over the long-term.
