Brentford manager, Thomas Frank, has claimed that Bees striker Ollie Watkins has a 'Cristiano Ronaldo type style' to his game.

Watkins has been brought into a more central position after striker Neal Maupay departed to the Premier League to play for Brighton and Hove Albion.

The 24-year-old hit his second goal of the season against Hull City on Saturday, and he appears to have taken to his new role in the side expertly.

The forward has the ability to play in either a wide position or a central role.

Speaking to the Richmond and Twickenham Times about his forward, Frank said: "It's a big comparison so I don't want to go down that route but, in a way, I've mentioned it now.

"He's like a Ronaldo-type, that he can play as a nine or he can play to the side, or he can play as a 10, but because he's so versatile he has abilities you can benefit off in all positions.

“Then it's about getting the best out of him and the team. It's not like he's the main man, but how can we get the two, three, four best players we have in the best possible positions to make it click?

“At this moment in time, I think he's the most natural nine we have, that's why it makes sense to play him there. If we still had Neal we'd play Neal there and then we'd play him in another position."

The Verdict

Watkins has waited patiently for his opportunity at the top end of the pitch and now Maupay has left the club, there's a real opportunity that he needs to take.

So far, he's done a pretty good job but it may be Brentford's undoing as the season goes on. It's tough to live up to a striker who has done so well at Championship level.

Frank comparing the forward to Ronaldo is quite something. It's understandable what he's saying in terms of describing the style. It'll probably be a good confidence boost for the forward.

It'll be interesting to see how he gets on when they travel to Elland Road to take on an unbeaten Leeds side.
