Thomas Christiansen has confirmed that Leeds United’s squad is edging closer to full fitness, with only Caleb Ekuban and Matthew Pennington currently out of contention, reports the Yorkshire Evening Post’s, Lee Sobot.

Ekuban has been ruled out for two months with a foot injury he picked up last month, whilst Pennington is edging closer to a first-team return, but is not yet in contention following an injury picked up on the opening day of the Sky Bet Championship season.

Pennington was forced from the field against Bolton Wanderers back in early August, the same fixture that Gaetano Berardi picked up a shoulder injury, which has ruled the defender out for over a month.

Berardi is now back in contention for Leeds’ clash with Burton Albion this weekend, where Christiansen’s side are looking to maintain their unbeaten start to the 2017/18 campaign.

The Whites have 11 points from their opening five Championship fixtures this season and currently sit third in the table, whilst also progressing through the first two rounds of the Carabao Cup.

Christiansen’s side are returning to Championship action following last week’s international break, and face two home fixtures in the next week, with Burton visiting Elland Road on Saturday, before the Whites welcome Harry Redknapp's Birmingham City on Tuesday.

The Verdict

It is easy to forget how many injuries Leeds have had to manage with this so far this season, with the Whites excelling in the Championship with a makeshift defence at times.

However, Christiansen will be facing a nice selection headache in the coming weeks, particularly with Berardi resuming training and coming back into first-team contention.

Pennington’s pending return will also hand Leeds a major boost, with the on-loan Everton man able to provide excellent cover for Pontus Jansson and Liam Cooper.
