Thomas Christiansen has provided a positive injury update on a number of Leeds United’s players, reports the Yorkshire Evening Post.

Leeds had been facing a potential defensive crisis heading out of Saturday’s clash with Millwall, with Liam Cooper and Matthew Pennington both absent from the trip to London, whilst Pontus Jansson was forced from the field with a hamstring strain.

However, Christiansen has eased fears on Leeds’ defensive situation, he said: “Liam is doing very well and with Pontus it’s nothing really important.

“Matthew Pennington trained for the first time with the whole squad today so it’s positive.”

Jansson has been ruled out of Leeds’ trip to Burnley by Christiansen, with the Whites heading to Turf Moor for the next round of the Carabao Cup.

Leeds have progressed through the first two rounds of the competition with ease, but now face a sterner test against Premier League opposition.

The Whites head to Burnley on the back of their first competitive defeat under Christiansen, having been beaten 1-0 by Millwall at The Den on Saturday.

Despite suffering their first loss of the season against Neil Harris’ side, Leeds remained top of the Championship table, but are now level on 17 points with Cardiff City and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Christiansen’s side will return to Championship action on Saturday, when they welcome fifth placed Ipswich Town to Elland Road.

The Verdict

This is the news that Leeds United’s supporters needed today – with many left worrying following Saturday’s clash with Millwall.

Cooper and Pennington edging closer to returning is a huge boost, but more importantly for Leeds is that Jansson’s injury is not serious.

The Swedish centre-back is vital to Christiansen’s side, and has been influential during the early stage of the season, helping Leeds top the Championship table.

It is a sensible decision to not play Jansson against Burnley, as he will be key to Leeds picking up a positive result against Ipswich if fit on Saturday.
