Football Insider are reporting that Sheffield United's journeyman striker Leon Clarke is on the verge of a move to Wigan Athletic in the next 36 hours.

The 33-year-old scored 19 times for the Blades last season, but has struggled for chances this time out thanks to the form of Billy Sharp and David McGoldrick.

He's scored just three this season in 29 outings, only nine of which have been Championship starts.

He's a popular figure at Bramall Lane, but as they hunt a Premier League place it seems he's likely to get left by the wayside.

For a player with almost 20 clubs on his CV, his final years have been impressive after struggling to settle anywhere for long periods of time.

Would he be a wise acquisition for the Latics? They're in danger of being tugged into a relegation battle and need a fighter, but is Clarke the right man? Our FLW writing team discuss.

Jay Taylor

“I can’t help but think this move will open up the door for a Will Grigg exit.

“And comparing the two strikers, I think Grigg is the better player - but Clarke will give the Latics another option in attack and a different way of playing.

“It’s a good move for all parties, and one that could see Wigan move away from the lower reaches of the division.”

Lee Connor

“Clarke has done superbly well for Sheffield United and will always have a place in Blades fans’ hearts.

“His time has come though as the Blades move on to bigger and better things, so Wigan would be a good fit.

“I’ve no doubt he can do it in the Championship still, and it might well be a shrewd signing for the Latics.”

George Harbey

"This'd be an excellent signing.

"He may be getting on a bit now, but he proved that age is just a number after scoring several goals last season.

"He’d suit their playing style to a tee, and it would be a smart move by Paul Cook."
