While the vast majority of the top flight English sides have looked upon their fellow Premier League teams for potential new signings, Newcastle United are looking to the Championship to provide them with new talent for the start of their new campaign.

Bristol City’s Joe Bryan has been at the forefront of transfer rumours from top flight outlets for some time, and the Magpies have entered the race for the left back.

The 24-year-old played 48 times for the Robins last season, including four starts in Lee Johnson’s sides impressive League Cup run.

Bristol City finished the season in a disappointing 11th place, but were considered play-off contenders until the final few weeks of the season, largely down to the work of Bryan.

With Paul Dummett as last season’s number one choice at left back last season, the introduction of Joe Bryan could provide youth, speed and technical excellence to St James Park.

Would it be a good signing for the Toon?

Our writers discuss the potential move for the Bristol City full back.

George Dagless

Absolutely - This'd be a top draw signing.

Bryan is good enough for the step up and under Rafa Benitez, I'd expect him to do well.

Bristol City will surely want to see him stay, though.

Jay Williams

Bryan is an upgrade on Paul Dummett and is easily Premier League standard.

At the age of 24, he already has well over 200 games for Bristol City under his belt, meaning that he has the perfect blend of youth and experience.

Predominantly a left-back, Bryan is also comfortable anywhere in midfield and this would be a superb signing for the Magpies.

Louie Chandler

This is a tricky one because there is no doubt that Bryan is a top Championship defender.

Whether he can make the step up to Premier League is a different question. I think he could, but there is no guarantee.
