Tommy Elphick is set to depart Aston Villa on a free transfer following their promotion to the Premier League, but the defender should have a fair number of suitors in the Championship.

One of those clubs could be Hull City, where Elphick spent the first-half of the season on loan, before returning and helping Villa into the play-offs.

With Elphick in the side, Hull were a more resolute team, conceding on average 1.2 goals a game, compared to 1.6 without the 31-year-old in the team. So it is clear he made a considerable impact and it may lead Nigel Adkins to sign him on a permanent basis.

So, would he be a good signing for Hull and should they make a move for him?

Our writers have their say:

George Dagless

"It's the first thing you thought about when it was revealed he'd be leaving Villa.
"Hull enjoyed decent form with Elphick in the side and I am sure that Nigel Adkins is more than eager to bring him back.
"That's if they can sort out the right contract offer for him."

Toby Wilding

"This could be a good signing.
"Elphick has plenty of experience, knows Hull well already, and it feels like he could have a point to prove after struggling for game time at Aston Villa.
"He did well during his loan at Hull earlier in the season, and the fact that he is available on a free means that this is a signing Hull should feel confident about pursuing."

Louie Chandler

"This'd be a solid piece of business.
"Hull will go into this season with a real sense of momentum after a surprisingly good 2018/19 campaign but they will need to remain shrewd in the transfer market.
"With Jarrod Bowen likely to leave, they would be wise to save their funds to strengthen their front line - so it would be a smart move."
