Following relegation from the Premier League, last year was the season the R's were meant to romp to promotion.

However, it wasn’t to turn out like that as they disappointingly finished in 12th place.

Granted, losing their prolific talisman Charlie Austin halfway through the season to Southampton rocked them. This wasn't helped, however, with the signings of Jamie Mackie and Peterborough striker Conor Washington not pulling their weight to the level that Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink would have liked.

The switch around in managerial duties didn’t help either, with Chris Ramsey departing in November, before Neil Warnock took caretaker charge for a month, before Hasselbaink joined from high-flying Burton.

Off the back of that campaign, the QPR fans will demand a higher finish than last season, and a push for the play-offs certainly isn’t off the books.

Here, Football League World writer George Harbey suggests a starting 11 that will surely win the league for the R's, if not that, then definitely win promotion.

GK: Alex Smithies

After signing an undisclosed seven-figure deal from Huddersfield Town in August 2015, Smithies was seen as the best out of a bad bunch.

The 26 year old who made 18 appearances last term, second choice to Robert Green who has now departed for Leeds United, will no doubt step up to be the R's number one.

Hasselbaink would want to strengthen his defence, that shipped 54 goals in the 2015/16 campaign, starting off by implementing Smithies as the preferred shot stopper.

RB: James Perch

Having signed for the R's in the last summer transfer window, the 30-year-old will be keen to stamp his authority on Loftus Road this term, and lead Rangers to promotion.

He made 30 appearances last campaign, in a season where the R's struggled to remain stable defensively.

However it will be hard for Hasselbaink to leave out Perch, who has had vast Premier League and Championship experience throughout his distinguished career.

CB: Joel Lynch

In attempt to shore up his defence, Hasselbaink recently captured the experienced Joel Lynch from Huddersfield Town.

The 28-year-old who made 122 appearances in his four year spell at the Terriers, has vast football league experience, and will no doubt be an unstoppable force at the back this season for the R's.

CB: Nedum Onuoha

After just being made club captain by Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, it will be hard to see the 29-year-old's destination being anywhere but Loftus Road this term.

Having made 122 appearances for the club since joining from Manchester City in 2012, he is no stranger to the QPR fans.

With pace and presence at the back, him and Lynch will form a formidable defensive partnership which will be hoping to concede much less than last campaign.

LB: Jake Bidwell

Having been agonisingly close to promotion with Brentford in the 14/15 season, Bidwell recently signed for the R's for an undisclosed deal.

The 23-year-old signed for the Bees from Everton as a teenager, making 126 appearances for the West London club.

With veteran Paul Konchesky's loan deal coming to an end, Bidwell completes a back 5 that will look to be nothing but solid this term.

RCM: Jordan Cousins

Cousins recently signed for QPR from Charlton Athletic.

The dynamic midfielder will add an element of energy and grit to the QPR midfield, and could be a influential character in the club's pursuit of a top six spot.

Making 125 appearance for Charlton, extremely impressive for a 22-year-old, his pace and energy as well as his firepower in midfield will ruffle a few teams' feathers this term, this could be a real coup for the Hoops.

LCM: Ariel Borysiuk

Completing defensive midfielder duties is Poland international Borysiuk.

The 24-year-old who enjoyed two spells with Legia Warsaw, making a total of 103 appearances, has played for the national team 10 times.

Having penned a three year deal with the R's, his decision to swap Champions League football with Championship football, would suggest that Borysiuk could be a real steal for Hasselbaink and for Rangers.

RM: Yeni Ngbakato

According reports in France, the R’s are rumoured to be courting the 24-year-old Metz wideman who scored 12 goals and provided 11 assists in Ligue 2 last season.

Despite Hasselbaink's alleged interest, the Metz player's agent states that he only wants to stay in Ligue 2 or above, however could be tempted with a considerable amount of money.

The homecoming of Jamie Mackie last term was an anti-climax for sure, with the winger failing to make as much as an impact as he did in first spell at the club, therefore at 30 years old, will be hard to see him feature in the squad this time around.

CAM: Tjaronn Chery

The 5ft 7 Dutch man was one of the many few to make a glowing impact on Loftus Road last term.

Making 25 starting appearances after signing from FC Groningen for a deal worth £2,250,000, the midfielder netted 10 times and assisted 8 times.

The loss of Leroy Fer to Swansea will be a big loss, however Chery is more than capable to do a job in the number 10 role where he performed so impressively last campaign.

LM: Matthew Leckie

mitremitremxbs

Following Matt Phillips' departure to West Bromwich Albion and the likely departure of Junior Hoilett, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has identified that the wide positions definitely need addressig, and it has now emerged that Matthew Leckie is a potential target.

The Australian 25 year old winger who has played at a number of German clubs including Borussia Mönchengladbach, FSV Frankfurt and his current Bundesliga side Ingolstadt, may be persuaded to make the switch to the R's

With the versatility both out wide and as an unorthodox forward, Hasselbaink may see him as a useful attacking option to have at his disposal, and more crucially a perfect candidate to replace Phillips.

ST: Lee Gregory

Lee GregoryLee Gregory

The Millwall man endured a magnificent spell in front of goal last season for the Lions.

After netting 20 times in the league last season, a campaign in which Millwall came agonisingly close to promotion via the play-offs, the R's as well as Rotherham have made heavy enquiries about the 27 year old.

Conor Washington failed to make as much as an impact at Loftus Road last term as he did at London Road for Peterborough, therefore Gregory's marksman and fox in the box ability will be influential in QPR's push for promotion this term.

So...what do you make of this QPR fans? Will this team gain promotion? Is Lee Gregory potentially a good signing? Does Conor Washington need more time? Let us know in the comments below!
