Lee Johnson has done a fantastic job since taking over at Bristol City.

After steering the club comfortably safe of the drop zone last year, he will look to invest this summer and mount a play-off challenge.

Bristol City have never played in the Premier League and have not been in the top flight since the 1979/80 season.

The past 35 years have seen some dark days for City fans as they have seen their club nip up and down between the second and fourth tier of the English football system.

But with Johnson comes a newfound sense of optimism and hope that they can compete at the top of the Championship rather than the bottom, with the ultimate aim of attaining promotion to the Premier League.

Bristol City already have the making of a good side with a hardworking, tight-knit core. With the owners willing to invest, there could be a good mixture of youth and experience next season.

Here is an XI who would surely be firing Bristol City towards the play-off spots......

GK: Frank Fielding

Frank Fielding is preferred to Richard O'Donnell in this team after the latter had a few shaky performances last season.

Fielding has played 83 games for Bristol City since joining in 2013 but suffered from injuries last year.

The 28-year-old has been a sort of journeyman after being loaned out 8 times by his first club Blackburn - for whom he never made a senior appearance.

The former England under-21 international - if fit - is likely to be Johnson's first choice goalkeeper unless Bristol City can complete the signing of Northern Irish stopper Michael McGovern.

RB: Adam Matthews

It is thought that Bristol City will soon complete the permanent signing of right back Adam Matthews from Sunderland.

The Welsh international played 9 games on loan at Ashton Gate last season.

He has only made two appearances for Sunderland since joining from Scottish champions Celtic last summer.

The deal is currently being held up whilst Sam Allardyce tries to find a full back of his own but it seems that both Matthews and Bristol City are keen on the Welsh international to complete the move.

The 24-year-old would start at right back under Lee Johnson next season.

CB: Aden Flint

Towering centre half Aden Flint is adored by Bristol City fans and rightly so.

His dominant performances at the back are only made better by his impressive goalscoring record.

The 6'6'' defender poses a real threat from set pieces and has scored a staggering 23 goals in 116 games for the Robins.

The 27-year-old is a leader at the back and could probably play at a higher level, but Johnson will be desperate to keep Flint at the club to star in the heart of defence for Bristol City.

CB: Hordur Magnusson

Hordur Magnussondd

According to Icelandic news outlet MBL, Hordur Magnusson has agreed to join Bristol City.

The Juventus defender will look to leave the Italian giants to reignite his career as he has never made a senior appearance for them.

Bristol City look to have won the race for his signature, tying the 23-year-old down to a three year contract.

The Iceland international can also operate at left back and is a real coup for the Robins, considering the other high profile clubs that Magnusson turned down to join up with Lee Johnson's side.

If he takes to English football, he could prove to be a very shrewd piece of business.

LB: Joe Bryan

Joe Bryan9000

Versatile 22-year-old Joe Bryan starts at left back in this team, but could also be used anywhere across the midfield.

Despite his young age, he has 91 senior league appearances for Bristol City already.

The Bristol born defender is an attacking full back with a great delivery. He is also very comfortable carrying the ball out of defence and demonstrates an impressive array of passing.

His attacking qualities make him a dangerous player on the overlap and he will team up well with the left winger to provide service to the frontman.

Bryan is highly admired by Johnson, who will be keen to keep him at the club this summer.

RM: Bradley Dack

The Gillingham ace was fantastic last season, and attracted interest from a plethora of Championship clubs.

It seems more and more likely that the 22-year-old is set to leave Priestfield Stadium this summer, and Bristol City would be an ideal destination for the man.

Under the tutelage of manager Lee Johnson, Dack could thrive and ultimately help them to a top six position.

CM: Gary O'Neil

New signing Gary O'Neil was a clever transfer by Lee Johnson.

He has recruited an experienced, talented, hardworking and versatile midfielder who has a good track record of getting teams promoted (West Ham, QPR and Norwich in the past 5 years).

The 33-year-old is a technically gifted central midfielder who can also play on the wing.

The former England under-21 international has a wealth of experience in the top two leagues, having played for Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, West Ham, QPR and Norwich.

He will now become one of Bristol City's most important players.

CM: Leon Osman

Free agent Leon Osman is hot property but Bristol City are among his potential suitors.

A move to the Championship looks likely for the central midfielder who has amassed over 350 Premiership appearances for Everton in a 16 year spell.

The 35-year-old has two senior international caps for England and would also add experience to the Bristol City midfield.

His main asset is his dribbling and attacking threat and this would be a welcome addition to the Robins' central midfield ranks.

LM: Luke Freeman

Bristol City fans could be forgiven for thinking that Luke Freeman is still only 24 as he has been around as a key player for years.

The former Arsenal youth player has over 200 senior appearances already despite his age and has been a star performer for Bristol City over the last couple of seasons.

The former England under 17 star is small but skillful and is an impressive crosser of the ball.

If the attacking midfielder can add more goals to his game then he can fire Bristol City towards the play-offs.

CF: Lee Tomlin

Lee Tomlin ms

Lee Tomlin signed a permanent deal with Bristol City after an impressive loan spell last season with the Robins.

He only made 6 Premiership appearances for Bournemouth before being farmed out for an 18-game stint where he contributed 8 goals in City's survival bid.

Now the 27-year-old returns wanting to fight at the other end of the Championship table with Bristol City.

His flair and trickery create plenty of chances and if he is performing well then Bristol City will also be doing well.

He will play on the shoulder of the striker, feeding off the scraps and trying to make things happen in the final third.

ST: Jonathan Kodjia

Jonathan KodjiaJonathan Kodjia

Kodjia had an impressive debut season for Bristol City last year.

After joining from Ligue 2 club Angers, he was hoping to follow in the footsteps of Olivier Giroud and Diafra Sakho, who had gone from being top scorer in France's second tier to top performers in England.

The Ivory Coast international scored 18 goals in 45 matches for Bristol City despite being isolated at times.

Without his goals, the Robins probably would have struggled to stay up. Kodjia is attracting interest from other clubs but if Johnson can convince him to stay, the service will be better for him next season and he is the ideal man to lead the line for Bristol City.
