Aston Villa manager Dean Smith looks like having a busy January transfer window as he looks to stamp his mark on his squad, but his plans could be derailed if in-form loan striker Tammy Abraham forces through a return to parent club Chelsea.

Departure for Abraham could force Smith's hand in the transfer market, with a need to replace his goals coming to the fore and if this transpires, then a loan move for Bournemouth veteran striker Jermain Defoe could be a potential option.

The ex-England ace is well out of the picture at the Vitality Stadium so a move away on loan in this transfer window is a distinct possibility.

So should Villa make a move for Defoe?

We discuss.....

George Dagless

Why not?

He'll score goals in the second tier without doubt and if he is up for a move down Villa are the sort of club to attract him.

They could need a striker soon and Defoe would tick plenty of boxes.

Gary Hutchinson

No, not at all.

Defoe has had a good career, there’s little doubting that, but he’s not one for the future.

Villa need to be forward thinking, dynamic and refreshing.

That is not Defoe.

Alfie Burns

A lot depends on Tammy Abraham.

At the minute, he’s scoring those vital goals for Villa, but if he departs, Dean Smith needs someone else to do that.

Jermain Defoe is a player that gets those goals.

Louie Chandler

This wouldn't be a bad idea.

With Abraham's future in the balance, it would be reckless of them to not have a back-up plan in place.

Defoe would be a safe pair of hands to bring in.
