One manager who has freshly emerged on the shortlist for the manager's job at Sunderland is Wigan Athletic manager Paul Cook, according to TeamTalk.

Would he be a good appointment for the Black Cats?

We discuss...

Ben Barkworth

Paul Cook would be a great manager for the Black Cats to bring in because he would be able to get the best out of them as a collective due to his deep tactical knowledge.

However, it would be a surprise to see him move down a division after such a successful season with Wigan who will be desperate to stay in the Championship for more than one season.

Jay Williams

This would be an excellent appointment for Sunderland.

Paul Cook has a track record of success: after winning the League Two title with Portsmouth, it looks like he will be winning the League One title with Wigan. Someone with experience of securing promotion is just what Sunderland need.

But Cook seems dedicated to his project at Wigan and he is a former player there as well, so I can't see him dropping down a division to join the Black Cats.

Chris Gallagher

It would be a great appointment.

Sunderland have to get out of League One next season and Cook has proven this year that he can do that.

It will obviously be tough to tempt him from a Championship side but he would be a top manager if Sunderland could manage it.

Alfie Burns

Why would he leave Wigan?

He’d be a great appointment for Sunderland, but he isn’t going to turn his back on Wigan to return to League One.

Sunderland are fishing in the wrong hole.

George Dagless

I can see why it could work.

He knows how to get teams promoted from League One and is a good manager, why would he leave Wigan though?

Sunderland are a bigger club but Wigan are in the higher division next season so surely Cook will want to see where he can take them.
