Newport County goalkeeper Joe Day is a target for Cardiff City ahead of their return to the Championship next season, BBC Sport have reported.

Day has made a total of 243 appearances in all competitions for Newport since joining from Peterborough in the summer of 2014, and played a key role in helping The Exiles reach the League Two play-off final last season, where they missed out on promotion to League One at the hands of Tranmere Rovers.

Earlier in the season, Newport boss Michael Flynn had admitted that the club would had to win promotion in order to keep hold of Day, so are now likely to be expecting offer for the goalkeeper having missed out on a place in the third tier.

The goalkeeper is out of contract at the end of the month, and has been offered a new deal by Newport, though Cardiff's reported interest may tear him away from Rodney Parade in the summer.

So, would Day be a good signing for Cardiff?

We asked some of our Football League World writers for their opinions.

George Brooks

"Day is a good goalkeeper and he could be a decent signing for Cardiff.

"He's got a good amount of experience in the EFL and would be a good player for Neil Warnock to have in his squad.

"However, I'm not sure he would be a good enough to start in the Championship every week, especially for a team who will be expected to challenge for promotion next season.

"There are surely more proven options out there for Cardiff this summer.

"If Cardiff do lose Etheridge this summer, then I think they will need a better replacement."

Toby Wilding

"This would be a smart piece of business for Cardiff.

"Day has more than held his own against higher level sides during Newport's remarkable FA Cup runs in recent years, so there should be very little concern about him making the step up to Championship level.

"With rumours of Premier League interest in current Cardiff goalkeeper Neil Etheridge refusing to go away, bringing in Day on a free could prove to be an inspired move.

"While Day may be coming in cheaply, Etheridge will not be leaving for anything other than a significant fee, that could allow Cardiff to spend big on other areas of the squad ahead of their return to the Championship.

"Having missed out on stepping up the divisions with Newport, Day himself is also likely to be keen on the move to the Championship, particularly with a side who will be targeting a return to the Premier League sooner rather than later."

George Harbey

"As far as goalkeepers go, I think that Joe Day is one of, if not the best goalkeeper in both League One and League Two.

"He has been a fantastic servant to Newport County over the last few years, and was influential in the Exiles’ march to the League Two play-off final last term, often making plenty of fantastic saves that won points on their own.

"It would be a good move for both him and for Cardiff if he signed for the Bluebirds - he wouldn’t have to relocate too much, and ultimately, he’s moving up to a very decent level.

"If Etheridge leaves this summer, then Day would be a very shrewd replacement for him, even though it may not grab the headlines initially."
