Ipswich Town manager Paul Lambert may need to start planning for life after Luke Woolfenden with the defender being linked with a move to Sheffield United, according to a report in the Daily Mail.

The defender has been a standout performer for the Tractor Boys this season, with the Premier League high-flyers adding Woolfenden to their transfer shortlist as they look to add to their defensive ranks.

So would Woolfenden be a good signing for the Blades? Is he good enough for the top-flight?

We discuss........

Chris Gallagher

"This would be a smart addition for the Blades.

"Chris Wilder knows the lower leagues very well and it's clear to everyone who has seen him play that Woolfenden is a huge talent that has the potential to play at the highest level in the years to come.

"That's exactly the sort of player Sheffield United should be targeting and the chance to sign for a Premier League side is going to appeal to the youngster.

"Obviously, he still has areas of his game that need to be improved and he wouldn't be ready to play in the top-flight right now, so a loan move either back to Ipswich or to the Championship would make sense. That may even be the case next season as well.

"However, in the long-term, he could definitely force his way into the Blades XI."

Toby Wilding

"This could be a useful signing for Sheffield United.

"While the step up from League One to the Premier League is unquestionably a big one, the number of options the Blades currently have in that position means that Woolfenden would not have to be thrust straight into a regular starting position, which could make this one for the future.

"Indeed, the versatility he possesses and potential he has shown for Ipswich, certainly suggests that in time, he could become a solid top-flight player for a side such as Sheffield United, as they look to establish themselves at that level long term.

"Woolfenden’s contract situation at Ipswich does at least mean they are under no pressure to sell him anytime soon, and it will be interesting to see if the Blades are willing to stump up the cash they may need to prise the defender away from Portman Road this month."

George Brooks

"This could be a decent signing for Sheffield United.

"Woolfenden is a promising young player and his performances for Ipswich in League One so far this season have been very encouraging.

"He's got a lot of potential and he should continue to improve as he gains more experience. He definitely could have what it takes to play at a higher level in the future, but I think it's way too early to tell whether he'd be good enough for the Premier League.

"It's quite a jump from League One to the Premier League and if he were to move to Sheffield United, it's unlikely that he'd get into the starting XI ahead of Jack O'Connell, Chris Basham or John Egan, given his lack of experience.

"Perhaps he'd be better of remaining at Ipswich and trying to gain more experience first. He signed a new contract at Portman Road fairly recently too, so the club are under no pressure to sell him."
