After a shocking start to the season, the board at Barnsley have taken the decision to part company with manager Daniel Stendel, with the Tykes down in 23rd spot in the Championship, only winning once in their first 11 matches.

One name to be linked with the vacancy at Oakwell is current Motherwell manager Stephen Robinson, who is one of the names under consideration after impressing north of the border, according to a report on Football Insider.

So would Robinson be a good appointment at Barnsley?

We discuss.........

Ned Holmes

“Not for me – I’m not sure he is the sort of manager they should be looking at.

“Robinson has done an impressive job at Motherwell, and has his side currently third in the SPFL, but I’d question whether he is the right man for the job at the moment.

“Barnsley’s main focus has to be Championship survival and I think they need someone with some experience in the division to help them do that.

“The Tykes have a very inexperienced young squad, so I think the best thing for them would an old head who knows the Championship.”

Chris Gallagher

"He certainly deserves to be under consideration.

"His side are flying high in the Scottish Premiership right now and he has taken the club to two cup-finals during his time in charge which is a great achievement.

"With budget restraints and the fact key players seem to always be sold, you have to say he has done a remarkable job and has shown he is capable of bringing younger players through.

"That seems to tick a lot of boxes for what Barnsley will be looking for and whilst he has no Championship experience, he is a young, improving coach who could give them the fresh ideas that they need to start moving up the table quickly."

Jacob Potter

"This would be a risk.

"Barnsley have struggled since their opening day of the season win over Fulham, and it looks as though their inexperienced squad don’t know how to get out of this winless run.

"The Tykes need stability and a manager that knows the Championship well, which Robinson doesn’t.

"I’m not doubting for a second that Robinson has been hugely impressive with Motherwell, but I think Barnsley would be making a mistake in appointing him as Stendel’s successor.

"The likes of Gary Rowett should be ahead of him in their options going forward, as he knows how to manage to a high standard in the Championship.

"If Barnsley appoint the wrong manager here, then they’ll almost certainly be making a swift return to League One this season."
