Aston Villa are reportedly interested in signing Real Valladolid midfielder Ruben Alcaraz, as Dean Smith prepares to reshape his squad ahead of the Premier League season.

The Villans won promotion to the top-flight after defeating Derby County 2-0 in the Sky Bet Championship play-off final, and will now look to strengthen their side in order to cement their place in the Premier League.

Alcaraz, according to Marca, is a player that Villa are holding an interest in, after catching the eye following an impressive campaign in La Liga for Valladolid.

The combative midfielder has been an ever-present in La Liga this season, and played an integral role in helping the club escape the drop to the Spanish second division.

Here, we discuss whether Alcaraz would be a good signing for Villa...

George Harbey

"I think Alcaraz is the sort of player that Villa should be targeting after winning promotion to the Premier League.

"He has decent pedigree having played in La Liga for a lengthy amount of time, and is clearly a very talented midfielder, therefore he would be a very useful addition for Dean Smith's side.

"They need reinforcements in that area with Glenn Whelan and Mile Jedinak approaching the latter stages of their career, so it remains to be seen whether Villa can lure him away from Spain."

Jacob Potter

"This would be a risk.

"Alcaraz doesn't have experience of playing in English football, and there's always that element of risk when it comes to a signing like this.

"I think that Villa should be targeting a safer option such as Anwar El Ghazi, who they know can play to the standards required in English football.

"There are better alternatives out there."

George Brooks

"Alcaraz is an experienced midfielder and has scored a few goals in Spain over the past few seasons.

"He is a decent player, but Villa should be aiming for better, especially now they are a Premier League club again.

"Dean Smith will be looking to strengthen his squad in the summer and build a team than can compete in the Premier League next season, but there are surely better options out there an Alcaraz."

"He has no experience of English football and would need to adapt to play in the top flight."
