Huddersfield Town defender Terence Kongolo is attracting interest from Aston Villa as Dean Smith looks to strengthen his squad ahead of their Premier League return.

The Terriers were relegated from the top-flight in the previous campaign after enduring a miserable year, although the club-record signing from Monaco was one of few who did reasonably well.

And, he certainly appears to have impressed Villa, with Football Insider revealing that the 25-year-old is a target for the newly-promoted west Midlands outfit.

So, how big a loss would Kongolo be to Siewert's side?

Our writers take a look...

Alfie Burns

"It’s obviously going to hinder Huddersfield a little bit, but following relegation, this kind of thing was surely to be expected.

"For Town, it is about how they reinvest the money they receive for Kongolo, which should be a fairly decent amount given his performances in the Premier League.

"Then, when you consider who might be buying him, you’ll be able to squeeze a few extra pounds out of Aston Villa, who have made no secret of their desire to splash the cash upon their return to the Premier League.

"A blow on the face of things, but one Huddersfield could benefit from."

Kealan Hughes

"This would be a big blow, but it is a move that shouldn’t come as a surprise to Huddersfield.

"He is one of their best players and one of a few in the squad who is Premier League standard, so it was only a matter of time before another club came in for him.

"A positive for The Terriers is that he is not irreplaceable. There are a number of capable defenders in the Championship for them to bring in who can do a job. It’s not like they’re losing a 20-goal a season striker - which are much harder to come by."

Chris Gallagher

"He's going to be tough to replace, there's no doubt about that.

"Kongolo is a good defender and whilst the side struggled on the whole last season, he did well and it's no surprise to see a Premier League side showing an interest.

"Realistically, Siewert is not going to be able to bring in a left-sided defender to the same standard but the money Kongolo will bring in could give the boss a chance to reinvest and improve the team elsewhere."
