Nottingham Forest midfielder Thomas Lam is set to depart the City Ground before the loan window closes.

The Finland international is on the verge of a move back to Holland with PEC Zwolle looking the likeliest destination, according to the Nottingham Post.

The 24-year-old left Zwolle to join Forest back in 2016 and was out on loan in the Eredivisie last season with FC Twente were he made 28 appearances.

Lam was almost an ever-present for Aitor Karanka’s men during pre-season but he looks to have fallen victim to the plethora of new talent acquired during the summer.

The Forest boss was tempted to keep the defensive-minded player but with the signing of a host of midfielders, the young Fin looks set to leave.

Serie B side Crotone have been linked with a move for the midfielder but a move back to his former Dutch side looks set to be on the cards.

With that said, we asked our FLW team their thoughts on the potential exit of Lam from Nottingham Forest.

George Dagless

It makes sense.

Lam had an okay pre-season but if Karanka doesn't feel he is good enough then there's no point keeping him around.

He needs to be playing and an exit only seems to be the way he's going to do that.

Jay Williams

This will not come as a surprise to anyone as Lam was clearly not in Aitor Karanka's plans.

There are better options ahead of him at centre-back and in central midfield so he is surplus to requirements.

The Finland international always struggled to adapt to English football and an exit was on the cards sooner rather than later.

For the sake of his career, it is important that he moves away from the City Ground.

This was inevitable.

It's evident that the midfielder has no future at Forest under Karanka, and it'll be beneficial for all parties if he's offloaded.

At the age of 24, Lam needs to be playing first-team football week in, week out so a move away from the City Ground makes sense.

There is no doubt that Lam has the potential to play at Championship level, and would likely start for many teams in the division, but just not for Forest.

With a plethora of options in the middle of the park, it is clear why Aitor Karanka is looking likely to send the midfielder out on loan this season.

But, with one year left on his current contract at the City Ground, it seems like an odd move for the Tricky Trees to agree to.
