After an uncertain summer, followed by a mediocre start to the season every decision made by Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce is coming under extreme scrutiny.

One area of major concern is defence where having already lost John Terry and Chris Samba during the summer, Villa allowed 30-year-old Tommy Elphick to depart to Championship rivals Hull City on a season long loan.

In light of their defensive frailties, was this a stupid decision to let Elphick go?

We discuss.....

Jay Taylor

This was a little silly, considering the lack of depth in the squad.

Unless a free transfer was in the offing, then Tommy Elphick should have stayed.

He was starting for Villa at the start of the season and even scored, so to offload him was a strange decision.

Gary Hutchinson

Yes, of course.

They don’t have two Championship quality centre backs to choose from, but they’ve got one out on loan.

He hadn’t set the world on fire in the first couple of games, but at least he is a centre back.

Bruce can’t blame the summer troubles, this is all his own fault.

George Dagless

It seems an odd one.

They were short on centre-halves before he left and have now let him go.

He has experience and I think it would have been wise to keep him around looking at their current form.
