This two-goal midfielder could be the perfect Whittingham upgrade at Blackburn

With the new season drawing ever closer, it is now time for Blackburn Rovers to start thinking about the upcoming campaign.

Tony Mowbray will start running the rule over his squad now that they are back in the Championship following promotion from League One, and some players might need to be upgraded on.

One area that Blackburn may look to strengthen is their central midfield options.

Rovers have several options there including Richie Smallwood and Ben Gladwin but they could upgrade on veteran Peter Whittingham, who had a disappointing season.

Here, we look at Queens Park Rangers midfielder Sean Goss’ stats last season and judge whether Blackburn should swoop.

Goss did not play a single match for QPR last season but went on to make 13 (including 10 starts) appearances on loan at Scottish Premiership side Rangers.

During those games, the former Manchester United youngster notched two goals and an assist from midfield and generally impressed Rangers fans with his displays.

The German-born central midfielder did pick up four yellow cards – suggesting his discipline needs working on – but he is still a raw talent and he could improve his game with more playing time.

It was puzzling that Ian Holloway never gave Goss more of a go beyond his three starts and three substitute cameos in the 2016/17 season but if Steve McClaren does not want him at Loftus Road, then Blackburn should pounce.
