It is safe to say that the sale of Aden Flint to fellow Championship side Middlesbrough certainly caused some unrest amongst Bristol City fans; for me, it was the final nail in the coffin for the Robins as a Championship side.

Having reportedly previously turned down bids from top flight side Brighton and Hove Albion, it gave hope that their captain would be staying put and might just guide his team to the Promised Land.

But it was as if the end of the season signalled the end of all hope for the Robins.

Allowing Bobby Reid to join rivals Cardiff City after finishing the Championship's third top goal scorer could be pardoned, as at least he was getting a move to the Premier League, while selling Flint to Boro makes you question Bristol City’s ambition to the greatest extent.

Flint played over 200 times for Bristol City in his five year spell at the club, and will be remembered as nothing less than a loyal servant and valiant leader, but selling him for a measly reported £5m to a side who nipped them to a play-off spot is unthinkable and unforgivable.

For those Robins fans who thought a play-off run was on the cards as late in the season as April, it is a complete contrast in emotion now that arguably your two best players will be playing elsewhere next season, and no sign of replacements inbound.

Despite finishing 11th, Lee Jonson’s side were just eight points short of a chance at top flight football last season, and if they had kept hold of Aden Flint, would likely be considered threats going into this season.

But, as we edge closer to the new kick off of the new season, one can only see them struggling.

Without their goal threat in the shape of Bobby Reid, the Robins struggled in front of goal. And without Flint in the heart of their defence, they seemed open at the back.

It will be up to the remaining squad to give everything they have going into this coming season, but without their star men, are likely to struggle.

Whether it was Lee Johnson’s decision to allow Aden Flint to go or not, you have to question the decision, the destination and the price tag.
