Joao Cancelo could be joining Wolves this summer according to Birmingham Live.

Nuno Santo had a stunning impact in his first season in charge of the club because he took Wolves up to the Premier League as Championship winners with 99 points.

He utilised a 3-4-3 system which spread play to the wings quickly before narrowing in the final third as the wingers drifted centrally and the wing-backs provided the attacking width, which is why Matt Doherty and Barry Douglas were so heavily involved with 19 assists between them.

Cancelo was on loan at Inter Milan from Valencia last season and made 26 appearances in total with Luciano Spalletti alternating between him and Danilo D'Ambrosio. His attacking contributions were good for his playing time because he scored a goal and assisted three mostly playing as a full-back.

He is capable in the traditional defensive areas because he averaged 1.6 tackles per game. However, offensively is where he shows his quality because he basically acts as another winger even when playing as a full-back, which naturally has its advantages and disadvantages.

The Portuguese full-back averaged 1.3 key passes as well as 1.7 dribbles, so he is more than capable of getting past a player if he is isolated on the wing and can take advantage of any openings he finds himself in.

Using him as a wing-back would get the best out of him while making sure his attacking tendencies don't have too much of a negative impact on the team's defensive shape. He has the quality to excel in the Premier League, and he would be a upgrade on Matt Doherty as Santo starts to gradually evolve the team over time.

The only issue is how much he would cost because Manchester City are interested and €45m is rumoured to be the minimum fee required for his services, according to Birmingham Live, so he might be a bit too much for Wolves to invest in currently.
