Blackburn Rovers are having an impressive transfer window after suffering relegation from the Championship last season.

Ahead of their upcoming League One campaign, Rovers managed to keep manager Tony Mowbray at the club and he has already been busy at work, strengthening the squad.

Blackburn released a number of players at the end of last season and they have started replacing them.

One area that has undergone a major reshuffle is in midfield.

With the departures of the likes of Jason Lowe, Danny Guthrie and Hope Akpan, Blackburn Rovers needed to bring in some replacements.

Tony Mowbray has already swooped to sign Gillingham star Bradley Dack, Rotherham United's Richie Smallwood, Cardiff City legend Peter Whittingham and Queens Park Rangers midfielder Ben Gladwin.

These four additions have added undoubted quality to the midfield ranks but one more defensive midfielder would be the final piece in this jigsaw for the Lancashire based outfit.

This void could be filled by Jay Spearing.

Jay Spearing, who previously had a loan spell at Blackburn in 2015, has vast experience of Championship and League One football.

The former Liverpool academy product is available on a free transfer after refusing to sign a new deal with Bolton Wanderers.

The tenacious 5ft 6in defensive midfielder was an integral part of Bolton's promotion winning squad last season and could replicate that success with Blackburn.

With over 200 senior appearances to his name, the 28-year-old needs to make the right move at such a vital stage of his career and a return to Blackburn could be a shrewd decision by Spearing.
