This Steve Clarke signing is likely to cut a frustrated figure at Reading FC right now

Reading have had their fair share of defensive problems this season, which led to their season spiralling out of control at one stage.

But the arrival of Jose Gomes seems to have steadied the ship at the Madejski Stadium, and Royals supporters will be hoping that he is the man to steer them clear of their relegation fears.

One man that certainly was disappointing under former Royals boss, Paul Clement, was club captain, Paul McShane.

The centre-back has recently returned from a lengthy injury spell on the sidelines, but he’s unlikely to be able to force his way into the starting XI anytime soon.

With Chelsea loanee, Matt Miazga partnering Liam Moore in the centre of the Royals defence, it remains difficult to see the former Hull man getting his chance in Gomes’ team.

McShane is obviously going to be hugely frustrated by his lack of game time, but even he will surely acknowledge that he doesn’t fit into Jose Gomes’ plans.

The newly appointed Royals boss likes to play a possession-based style of football, that wouldn’t suit McShane.

At the age of 33, his days at the Madejski Stadium seem numbered, and he’ll sure be tempted by a move away from Berkshire.

If he does choose to leave the club in the summer, it will give the likes of Tom Holmes and Tom McIntyre a chance to stake a claim for a starting spot, both of which have looked like promising talents.

Although McShane brings a significant amount of experience to this Reading team, he simply isn’t going to be getting anywhere near enough regular game time in the near future.

If Reading are to retain their Championship status, then it all but ends his chances of playing for Reading again, as he wouldn’t be good enough at this level by the start of next season.
