Keiren Westwood should be heralded as one of the key men behind Sheffield Wednesday’s up-turn in form under Steve Bruce.

The Owls are unbeaten since Bruce’s arrival at Hillsborough which has seen them move to 13th in the table and just six points shy of the play-offs.

Westwood played second fiddle to Cameron Dawson under previous manager Jos Luhukay, but he has now kept eight clean sheets in 13 games to re-establish himself as Wednesday’s number one.

His run of impressive performances has earned him a recall to the Republic of Ireland squad, while Owls fans are now hoping the 34-year-old will sign an extension to his Wednesday contract which expires in the summer.

He came to the rescue for Bruce’s side in their 1-1 draw at Derby on Saturday when he produced a string of late saves to deny Jayden Bogle, Florian Jozefzoon and Duane Holmes.

Westwood’s shot-stopping is his key strength. There have also been a number of further occasions in recent weeks against the likes of Brentford and Sheffield United when his sharp reflexes have proved essential.

The Irishman’s vast experience has also added some much-needed security to Wednesday’s defensive unit. Dawson had not performed badly during his time as number one, but the Owls’ defence will feel more comfortable when backed by Westwood’s authoritative presence.

Westwood has now established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the league based on current form, having been so influential with regularity since his return to the side.

Wednesday’s resolute defence has formed the basis for Bruce’s success as Owls’ boss and this has given his side a platform to compete at a higher standard since January. However, Bruce’s side must now improve their clinical edge in front of goal after they failed to create many opportunities at Pride Park.

Wednesday have been involved in three goalless draws during Bruce's reign so while they don't concede many goals, their attacking record may cause difficulties further down the line.

The Owls now have a difficult run-in which includes trips to Leeds and Norwich, but Bruce’s side are certainly capable of causing an upset in the play-off chase providing a sturdy defensive unit remains their prized asset.
