Sheffield United trio Kean Bryan, John Lundstram and Kieron Freeman are unavailable for Friday night’s clash with Aston Villa, as they have been named in the starting line-up to face Doncaster Rovers in a development squad match today.
The latter hasn’t featured for the Blades since their shock 1-0 defeat to National League side Barnet in the FA Cup, and has been absent from the squad that has faced Queens Park Rangers, Swansea City, Norwich City and Bolton Wanderers in recent weeks.
And the 26-year-old is set to miss out on the trip to Villa Park on Friday night, with the Welsh international named in the starting line-up to face Doncaster Rovers in the Premier League Youth Cup this afternoon.
Lundstram has also been named in the team to face Doncaster as he steps up his return to first-team action – the 24-year-old was named on the bench to face Bolton Wanderers last week, and has made just five league starts this season.
Bryan has endured a torrid time at Bramall Lane since joining from Manchester City in the summer – the 22-year-old recently made his United debut against Barnet having been a regular feature for the development squad this season.
A win over Villa would see Chris Wilder’s men temporarily go to the top of the Championship with Norwich and Leeds both playing at the weekend. The Blades have won just one of their last three league games.
It is a hardly a massive blow for United that they have Bryan, Lundstram and Freeman unavailable for the trip to Villa Park, but I’m sure Wilder would rather have them available.
Freeman has endured a disappointing season having lost his place at right-back to George Baldock, but the Blades could really do with him being unavailable with a hectic period ahead.
What a win it would be for United if they managed to beat Villa.
