Sheffield Wednesday kick-off the new Championship season at home to Barnsley this weekend, with caretaker manager Lee Bullen still at the helm at Hillsborough, with the Owls board yet to make a permanent appointment.

Tottenham Hotspur chief Mauricio Pochettino has added to the managerial speculation regarding the Owls, by recommending his Argentinian friend Nestor Lorenzo to Wednesday, who is reported to be keen on a job in England, it is reported in The Sun.

So would the former Colombia assistant coach be a good appointment at Hillsborough?

We discuss........

"This has the potential to be a disaster move - it is not a sensible option for a number of reasons.

"Lorenzo has no managerial experience and his only experience of England was 24 appearances for Swindon Town in the early nighties.

"There is nothing to suggest that he is knowledgeable about English football or the Championship, coaching players and preparing them for matches. There is nothing about him which suggests he could do a decent job, other than the fact he is being recommended by a top coach.

"Wednesday need a manager to serve them long-term, who knows the players in the squad and what it takes to produce winning football in the second-tier. Lorenzo's only coaching experience came working in the Argentina national team, a far-cry from The Owls.

“This seems risky.

“Clearly, Mauricio Pochettino is a brilliant manager, but does he know what it take to succeed and, ultimately, get promoted from the Championship? I’m not so sure.

“Lorenzo has never had a senior management role and never had a management role in England.

“It could be a masterstroke but I think it is far too risky this close to the start of the season.

“As dull as it may seem to some Owls fans, they should be looking to bring in someone with a bit more experience.”

"I'm really not that sure about this one.

"Barring a brief spell with Swindon in his playing career, Lorenzo has had very little connection with the English game, so he may not be all that familiar with the league he would be stepping into with Wednesday, and it doesn't appear that he has had all that much senior managerial at all, which could be a concern.

"That being said, the fact that Lorenzo is familiar with the English language is arguably an indicator of his interest in the game in this part of the World, he may be more familiar with the Championship than we imagine, and it does appear to suggest that he would be more than willing to do his research on the division properly should he make the move to Hillsborough.

"Pochettino is not a bad reference to have either, and given what he has learned during his time in football, if Lorenzo is someone he thinks is worth taking the chance on at Wednesday, then it may well be something worth considering for the Owls hierarchy."
