Reading are closing in on a deal to sign Aston Villa defender Tommy Elphick on loan until the end of the season, according to Sky Sports.

The Royals are in need of reinforcements as they occupy 18th spot in the Championship, in what has been a dreadful season for last season's play-off finalists.

Is Elphick a good signing for Jaap Stam's team?

We discuss....

Adam Simeoni

This really is a class signing for Reading.

The Royals have been poor this year, and the addition of Elphick should really tighten things up at the back.

He could form a really strong partnership alongside Liam Moore.

Sam Preston

Elphick is a decent signing.

He’s an experienced and honest pro, who can make a difference in the Championship.

In Reading’s current league position, they aren’t going to attract many better players.

Good move.

George Dagless

It's a good signing for them.

Elphick is more than capable of having a positive impact for the Royals and should help get them up the table.

The only thing I'd wonder, though, is whether this means Liam Moore might just move on this month.

Alfie Burns

If Stam can get Elphick playing to the best of his ability it will be a shrewd move by Reading.

There is certainly a quality player in Elphick, and if he can get back to the top of his game, this could be one of January’s best deals.

There is obvious risk, but it is certainly a risk worth taking given Reading’s atrocious form.

Chris Gallagher

Exactly what they need!

The Royals are struggling this season and Elphick will provide leadership and experience as well as more quality in defence.

Jaap Stam needs more signings to come through the door but this is a good start.
